Mike Riordan, CPO for McDonald’s Corporation, and Jack Mulloy, CEO of BuyerQuest, presented to the Procurement Leaders community last week. The topic was “Bringing Change Across the Organization by Revolutionizing the User Approach”. Mike spoke about the complexities the indirect spend team faced within the McDonald’s organization due to McDonald’s unique corporate structure and autonomous culture. The McDonald’s system is comprised of three separate groups: McDonald’s Corporate, McDonald’s Owned restaurants, and the McDonald’s franchisee network. Since each group within McDonald’s had its own procurement goals and processes, driving meaningful change across all of McDonald’s was a monumental challenge for McDonald’s Procurement organization.
Driving User Adoption
Due to the autonomous culture (particularly within the McDonald’s Owner Operator community), Mike talked about McDonald’s using “a carrot as opposed to a stick” to drive user adoption and contract compliance. McDonald’s upgraded their previous eProcurement efforts and solution to bring a much more user friendly buying experience to the McDonald’s community of nearly 2 Million people. The user adoption results across the McDonald’s community were immediate and resulted in impactful value to McDonald’s bottom-line. As one satisfied McDonald’s end user commented, “Learning to use the McDonald’s Marketplace takes less time than ordering a Happy Meal.”
An eCommerce Mindset
Jack discussed how BuyerQuest’s Procure-to-Pay solutions are built with an eCommerce mindset that focuses heavily on driving the highest levels of end user adoption. As the BuyerQuest platform has evolved and scaled, BuyerQuest has created further separation from 1st generation eProcurement solutions by embracing cognitive computing. Through a strategic partnership with IBM, BuyerQuest became the first enterprise procurement solution to integrate with IBM Watson and bring cognitive capabilities to enterprise procure-to-pay. As Jack said “Since launching BuyerQuest 5 years ago, BuyerQuest has prided itself on being the most user friendly enterprise procurement platform. Now, through our relationship with IBM, BuyerQuest will blaze the trail from a Cognitive perspective as well.”
